Mike Winder was elected mayor of West Valley City, Utah’s second largest city, in 2009. Previously he had served a term on the City Council and as the city’s business development manager. In the private sector, Winder has been director of public affairs for The Summit Group Communications, vice president of marketing for Winder Farms, and deputy campaign manager for Congressman Jim Hansen.
Winder has an MBA and Honors BA in History from the University of Utah and has also completed an executive leadership program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He is the author of nine published books, including the regional bestseller Presidents and Prophets. He and his wife Karyn are the parents of four children.

While mayor, the city has worked to redevelop the Valley Fair Mall, launched the half-billion dollar Fairbourne Station project, secured naming rights for the Maverik Center, and reduced crime, graffiti and code violations. He helped launch the city’s English Language Initiative and Government Transparency Standard.
Prior to his election as mayor, Winder served a term as an at-large West Valley City councilmember, four years as the city’s business development manager, and as vice president of marketing for Winder Farms. He has also been director of public affairs for The Summit Group Communications and deputy campaign manager for Congressman Jim Hansen.
Winder was appointed by Governor Jon Huntsman to two terms on the Utah Board of State History and also serves on the boards of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, the Wasatch Front Regional Council, the Salt Lake Council of Governments and the Utah Republican Party State Central Committee.
Mayor Winder was elected by his peers to be president of the Utah League of Cities and Towns, and president of the Salt Lake Valley Conference of Mayors. In 2011, he was named “Best of State” mayor for Utah, recognized in City Weekly’s “Best of Utah”, and was a nominee for the Salt Lake Tribune’s “Utahn of the Year"
